Principal's Message

Serrano Families and Community:

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year at Serrano Elementary School!  I am honored to be serving a second year as principal of our fabulous Serrano Elementary School!

Our Mission at Serrano Elementary is to ensure students are college and career ready by achieving high academic standards in a safe and positive learning environment.  At Serrano we are committed to student achievement because we believe all students can and will learn.  Our teachers are highly qualified, experienced, motivated, and truly care about each and every student.  We are implementing highly effective instructional strategies, integrating technology in classroom instruction, increasing instructional rigor, implementing researched based interventions, and teaching Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to effectively prepare our students for the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) administered to students each spring.

At Serrano Elementary we support our amazing Moreno Valley Unified School District Strategic Plan and LCAP priorities.  Some of the new and continuing educational and student support initiatives at Serrano Elementary are as follows:

* Step up To Writing--We are revisiting the Step Up to Writing Strategies now aligned with Common Core State Standards in support of writing for student achievement.

* Thinking Maps--We are implementing year one of Thinking Maps at Serrano!  We believe the researched based graphic organizers will assist students organize their thoughts and support academic learning.

* Growth Mindset--We are focusing on the positive, a "can do" attitude, and the belief that every student can and will learn.  More information about the Growth Mindset philosophy will be communicated through parent information meetings.

* Character Development--K-5th grade students will be participating in the Sanford Harmony character development instruction focusing on kindness, empathy, and character development.

* Computer Mediated Instruction--All our students will have access to reading and math web-based intervention program from Compass Learning.

* Student Attendance--We continue our important mission of achieving 95% or better school-wide attendance to reduce absences and tardies.  We have planned fun student motivation events to promote the importance of attendance and reward excellent and improved attendance.  Please support us with this important task and have your child at school every day and on time.

* School Climate--At Serrano Elementary we not only care about our students' academic success but the "whole child" and family.  We want to make Serrano the best educational setting possible and create a positive, happy, learning environment we are all proud to call "our school."  Aligned with LCAP priorities you can be assured we want to continually improve our school climate and welcome your input.

Parent communication and involvement is valued at Serrano Elementary so we will continue to communicate in multiple formats.  We update our school electronic marquee regularly and in our efforts to go paperless we continue utilizing the Peachjar system for flyers, announcements, and surveys.  Please expect to receive Blackboard recorded phone calls, Parent Link emails and text messages announcing school events.  Please join our Twitter account to receive instant school and District news, parent resources, and important Serrano activities/event notifications via your cell phone:  @Serrano_Hawks.  In addition, our website at http://serrano.mvusd.net/  is updated regularly to better serve our students and parents.

We welcome parent involvement and ask for your collaboration in our school committees of School Site Council (SSC), English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC), African American Parent Advisory Committee (AAPAC), Associated Student Body (ASB), and we appreciate our parent volunteers for the 100 Mile Club, classrooms, and office.  This school year I am implementing monthly meetings "Coffee Chats with the Principal" to communicate school initiatives, obtain your valued feedback, and have the opportunity to discuss your concerns and ideas for an amazing school!

At Serrano Elementary we practice a positive culture of open communication, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher via email, telephone, or schedule a meeting to meet with them and discuss your child’s education.  I am usually at the front of the school during arrival and dismissal and I would love to personally meet you, so please do not hesitate to say “Hello.”  Also, please feel free to openly communicate with me at any time—walk-ins are always welcomed and if I am not available, please ask my office staff to make an appointment to meet with me.

Respectfully,

Maria Arreola
